ABOUT

Robert is an accomplished composer, arranger and orchestrator, and an experienced pianist. He offers a broad range of music services including typesetting and editing scores. He is primarily interested in music for screen and TV, jazz, music for stage shows, and concert music.

He was brought up in coastal North Wales, and started studying music performance and theory at a young age. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Durham University, and MA in Composition at Bath Spa University under James Saunders and Matthew Sergeant. Robert has an extensive background in jazz, theatre, classical and contemporary concert music, and has collaborated on a diverse selection of projects over many years.

Robert particularly enjoys composing music for screen and stage, and the opportunities they present to shape an audience’s perception of the visual performance. He studies film scores from all eras, especially mid-20th-Century British and US films, and draws on his hugely varied musical background to create his music. Robert is experienced in composing for live instrumental and vocal performers, and is as comfortable writing for large orchestras as he is for solo musicians. He also enjoys audio composition for video, using sample libraries and synthesisers in conjunction with his own studio recordings to create a sound world with which to write a score.

His portfolio of jazz compositions and arrangements is a constantly growing collection, and many have been performed by big bands and jazz orchestras for concerts and recordings.

Robert is an experienced pianist and plays in a wealth of ensembles and settings. He has a particular interest in improvised jazz, and enjoys recording sessions. He plays with big bands and for theatre productions, and enjoys accompanying soloists and playing for chamber groups.

He transcribes recordings of improvised music, for subsequent live performance, and offers sheet music preparation services.
